Tough Guy 96

1,500 nutters gathered in freezing conditions in January to take part in the annual Tough Guy event - an 8 mile cross country/assualt course through snow, ice, mud and water. Including the Get Active Team. Despite the Arctic conditions, spirits were high as the eager (some might say mad)competitors ran, jumped, climbed and crawled their way around an assault course designed to push them to the very limits of their endurance. Wading through numerous icy streams, rivers and ponds (the organisers had to break the inch thick ice first)the competitors were also faced with climbing and scrabble netting 28 ft high. Their efforts were rewarded by the £45,000 sponsorship money raised which this year went to Tettenhall Horse Sanctuary, one mad way to raise funds.

Chief nutter, a Mr Wilson who organises the event believes people's lives are too soft. "They need to know what it was like during the war. No heating, loss of sleep, plenty of hard work!"

If this is your idea of fun look out for future Tough Guy events including a series of Survival Training Weekends in June/July. Participating teams will be expected to spend 3 days in an enactment of war conditions, with only short periods of rest. There are also plans for a Woman vs Man trail running contest in Autumn '96. Women contestants will have a 10 minute start on the men and will be allowed to do anything they can to stop the men completing the course (the course organiser says this includes rape and pillage, but this sounds like wishful thinking!).

Any potential nutters wishing to participate in any Tough Guy events should call Mr Wilson on 01902 764422.
